Hi Cecilia,
This is a great question. Read here for more info on how to become a dance teacher. If you guys have anything to add, please do by clicking to comment below!
First the "disadvantages" which I'd like to call challenges.
-Financial
It is challenging to work enough hours for a teacher to support themselves on teaching alone. Many teachers also have a part time job.
Also, there is no pay for classes that fall on breaks and there is some planning involved in getting through the summer financially.
-Late Hours
Many teacher work evenings and Saturdays. Dancers are often used to this kind of schedule, but it can hinder trips out of town.
-Responsible for your own Continuing Ed.
Some studios pay for their teachers to go to classes and conventions, but not many. Paying for continuing ed on a teacher's wage can be challenging but is absolutely necessary to prevent burn out.
-Dealing with Dance Parents
I don't think I have to explain this one.
Ok, now the fun stuff. The advantages of teaching dance:
-Working in the Dance World
Teaching is a fabulous way to continue to develop as an artist even if you've decided becoming a dancer is not for you.
-Molding Young Minds
It may sound cliche, but teaching dance to kids is very rewarding. They'll make you laugh, cry and provide a big sense of purpose in life.
-Not a 9-5
Teaching is a great option for those who are allergic to the cubicle. Odd hours and lots of moving around is the perfect situation for many dancers.
-Room for Growth
There are many opportunities for growing into more and more responsibility if you want to. The path from assistant to teacher to choreographer and company director is satisfying.
