First, let’s just reiterate the importance of taking class in correct footwear. Ask any teacher or professional dancer and they will tell you, it’s important. Not only are good dance shoes specifically designed for ultimate technical and aesthetic success of the dancer, but they are engineered to provide the best support and injury protection available. So, if you have a choice of skimping on your dance wear or dance shoes, get the cheaper leotard and find shoes that will be best for your feet.
The 2 most important things to think about before you buy inexpensive dance shoes are your specific foot needs and how much dancing you are going to do?Your Skill and Dedication Level If you are pounding your feet in class 5 hours a week or more, you are going to need a much different quality of shoe than if you are attending a fun class for an hour a week. A dancer's most important tool is her feet. You've gotta look out for them and sometimes that means paying a couple extra bucks. Not only that, but if you are dancing several hours a week you are probably going to blow through cheap shoes fast, costing you more in the long run than investing in higher quality shoes. Now, if you are a beginner or casual student, I definitely recommend finding the cheapest shoes you can. That way you can get to know the style and what you want out of a shoe without blowing the bank. How Special are Your Feet? Sometimes average has its advantages. Discount dance shoes are made to fit comfortably on a generic foot. If you are blessed with very average feet, you are going to be able to wear cheaper shoes without too much trouble. So, if you have an average arch with average toe length and average sensitivity on your heels and Achilles tendons, it might be worth trying the cheap shoes first. If they work for you, fabulous! If you know that you are not average in one or more of these areas, I'd try looking for special features like Achilles tendon notches and extra padding. They will cost more upfront, but save you're feet in the long run. When you are a veteran at finding the right shoes, and are dancing through them at an alarming rate, it can be less expensive and less time consuming to order them online.
