May 20, Where Are the Interesting Ballet Shoes?

The Capezio Breeze is nearly extinct and that makes me sad. This happens to all shoes. Because we are constantly innovating to find a better way to do things, and because new, exciting shoes sell more than old, reliable shoes. Nike does the same thing. They create a fabulous shoe, market it to get people hooked, and then kill it a few months later hoping all the fans buy multiple pairs in their despair. Annoying, but it keeps the market rolling. Wha'can'ya'do. But I really liked the Breeze. Leather at the high-impact areas, Spandex mesh everywhere else. Graceful and technical. And I'm not holding my breath for a new, exciting model from Capezio any time soon. I'm not sure what direction the company is going, and from the inconsistency the last few years, I don't think they do either. Maybe Bloch will pull through for me. What do you look for in a Ballet Shoe? Meanwhile, check out other really good leather ballet shoe options.

I love getting a pedicure, but I never do it because after class it always looks like this. So, I've avoided toe paint for almost a year until I couldn't take it anymore. All my coworkers had cute toes and I wanted some too. So a quick DIY peddi and I was smiling. Then I went to class. Of course it was floor work day. My polish never stood a chance. I switch out my modern shoes depending on the class, the floor and my mood. (Do I want to feel the wind between my toes or get in touch with my inner bun head?) But a pedicure is new a good reason to reach for my Twyla's. There is a long list of reasons to go with a half sole. This one is just my new favorite.

Capezio's Freeform remains one of my favorite new shoes. And seeing so many at last weeks competition reminded me how great they look. You want to dance in these because the Spandex/leather build hugs your foot. No gaps, no extra material. This shoe is almost as invisible onstage as any half sole, but with full coverage. (Remember, it is about color matching.) And the Freeform's design is so fun. The angled pattern looks edgy but clean. It is a mature way to stand out in class. At a recent competition, I couldn't help but notice how many dancers wear Capezio FootUndeez. I couldn't help it because they glow from stage! My favorite feature of a modern/contemporary shoe is that they disappear on stage. Half-soles like Twylas and Pirouettes are really good at this. But the best shoes to blend in are Dance Paws. Not distracting at all. Really the problem is matching skin color. FootUndeez are often too light. So make sure that you match your skin tone when looking for modern dance shoes! You want the judges watching you, not your shoes.

Capezio recently announced that they are soon to release pointe shoes with a "new and improved fit." Whether that means a Tendu III or Plie III or another whole new shoe all together (like the Tiffany), I don't know for sure. But my guess is they are revamping (no pun intended). You've probably noticed that I haven't been putting up/updating as many pages lately. No, I'm not on early holiday break. I've been working on a project I'm very excited/nervous about. An e-book guide for parents buying the first pair of pointe shoes!! I'm excited because pointe shoes are the most important dance shoes a girl ever buys. And with some key information, it can be a fun, relaxing process. I'm nervous because this is a BIG project for me and I want to make sure I cover all my bases. So I'm going to get back to work! I really like Capezio's Pro Canvas ballet slipper. It's classic and well designed. So when I noticed that all of the "free shoes" sent out by Capezio were the Pro Canvas, and that they are on a big discount online, I started to worry. Should I stock pile Pro's?? The answer I found is yes and no. No because Capezio is not discontinuing the model, just the ballet pink color (the color that is being given away). Few Yes because, althought the ballet pink is very pink, it is a great shoe and you can get it at a great price while supplies last! So if you are a fan of the Pro and/or need some low price, quality shoes for the new year, get online and grab them now!

Capezio's website has been fairly dead for months. No updated products and no online store. But recently they've updated the site with an attractive photo gallery of the SYTYCD cast in the new Fizzion shoes. That isn't the only change. They have also relocated their Capezio store on Amazon. It is not surprising that they would want someone else to take over all the work that goes into running and maintaining an online store. Hopefully this means they are putting all their efforts in to making more revolutionary shoes like the Fizzion!
